Spring Into Renewal

Dear Friends of Green Burial,

I’m writing to you from the Berkshires where I’ve been delighting in the snow of the late winter Nor’easter.  Before the storm, I was delighting in the bulging buds of a flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), which were hidden by the snow.  My good friend lost a quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), pictured above, along with the power to his home after named storm Sage deposited at least two feet of heavy wet snow where he lives in one of the hilltowns of Massachusetts.

I can imagine the future though. First, the creamy white flowers of the dogwood will beckon pollinators and then the chartreuse leaves will be dangling from the branches.  In the woods on my daily walks over the next several weeks and into May, I will see hundreds of spring ephemerals – Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum), Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginia), Trillium (Trillium erectum), and Jack in the Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum).

Nature is such a gift and all of our lives are so ephemeral.  Thank you being on this journey with us. Read more.
